I should have updated this a long time ago, but
I've been rather busy. Well, I still don't have the operating
system for my dedicated server yet and I don't think I'll order form
Gateway again, not for servers anyway. I've received my new
orders (did I mention I was in the navy?) and will be reporting to
Groton, CT here early next year and I expect to set up shop there
for a few years. Things will improve then since I'll be on
shore duty in a teaching job and will have much more free time.
In the meantime Gateway will be hearing from me often till I receive
my operating system and I'll have to keep running my servers off of
my PC. Definitely not the way I was planning on doing it but
I'll just have to make due. My plans are to put a message
board on my site and maybe run a IRC server to increase
communications and user feedback so I can keep up-to-date on what
you, my visitors, think. Also, I apologize to anyone who's
tried, over the last few months, to connect to my server and found
them down. Because I live in a barracks, every time I've left
during my lengthy underways someone has come into my room, for one
reason or another, and shut off my computer. I was afraid
something like this would present itself as a problem and
unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about it. Another
reason I'm looking forward to transferring. Until then I still
won't be able to guarantee uptime, and for that I apologize. I
appreciate the patience of my subscribers during this time. I
hope to be able make it up to them when I am able to better manage
my server. Well, that's all for this update. I
appreciate your visit and hope that you will return to see how
things improve over the next year.
May 31st, 2002 - First Return
Unfortunately, as I was a afraid of, when I
returned my server was shutdown. I knew there was a chance
that my server would be taken down, however I hadn't anticipated it
to happen just a few days after I left when my room was entered.
So while I still can not guarantee up-time, I can promise that while
I am here my server will be up.
On another note, I've resolved my problems with Gateway and expect
the operating system for my server in less than two weeks.
When I receive it, I'll have my dedicated server up within a week
after. I'm looking forward to it.
April 19th, 2002 - Traveling
I leave today for about a little over a month.
When I return I plan on getting my server up and running after
resolving a little issue involving the lack of an operating system I
ordered. I'm looking forward to starting to use my new server.
It will really improve the quality of things that I will be able to
do. I appreciate everyone's patience while I go off and do my
job. I know it's at least killing me that I have to leave this
unresolved. I will leave my current web server up, but I can't
guarantee up-time. Basically if you stop loading this page, my
computer has gone down.
April 15th, 2002 - Photo Gallery
I've added a photo gallery to both document
what I've done and show what I'm currently doing.
April 5th, 2002 - The Way a Web Site Should be Hosted
Many of the problems I have with hosting this
website should disappear soon. I've ordered my first (probably
of two) servers. It should arrive on the 22nd, unfortunately
I'll be gone during that time and won't be back till the next month.
However, buying it is the first step, and that's done. When I
return I'll start the process of moving all services over the the
server. To get an idea of what the server is like here are a
few of the tech specs on it:
Processor: (2)Intel® Pentium® III Processor 1.26-GHz with 512K
full speed L2 Cache
With this server I should be able to start giving the type of
service that most people would expect from a web hosting service.
Things will improve after the transfer is complete.
March 5th, 2002 - First Step Toward Greatness
I've made the first step towards turning my
little site into something semi-professional. I've placed an
order for a portable, rack server storage case. I plan on
ordering some rack style servers and I'll put them in there.
That will be the home of manther.com. Right now my plans call
for two servers and an UPS, but I'm looking at T1 and keeping and
keeping an eye out for other useful things that I could use with my
soon-to-be new servers. I'll get a server as soon as I get my
tax return, so expect changes soon. I'm going to try too keep
the downtime to a minimum, maybe only a day. But that requires
a bit of prep work first, so it'll be a bit even after I get the
server before I'll be able to implement them. All accounts and
files will be transferred with the move, so none of my current
members will need to worry about loosing data or pages. In the
long run, I think this will be a good move for manther.com, and will
be some good practice for me.
February 6th, 2002 - Success
It's finally up and past my firewall.
Unfortunately just as I get it up and running my job requires me to
take off again. I'm going to have to put off working on my
site till I get back around the 20th. I've learned a lot so far, but
I still have a long way to go. Keep checking back (after the
20th) to see what I've accomplished and what I plan to do next.
February 3rd, 2002 - Day 1
Well, here it is. This is the beginning
of my new web server with whatever services I decide to provide.
Right now my style skills leave much to be desired, but over time
I'll fix that. To be honest I don't really know where I'm
going to take this, but I've already started basic free web hosting
services. As I learn more about how to make decent looking
pages and add more and more services to my web server (which is
currently running on my PC) I'll keep this page updated on my
progress. So if I'm hosting your site or your just curios as
to what I've been doing, check back here for the latest on my
progress and server status. If your interested in using my
hosting services, which are limited right now, please e-mail me.
